Ava married on a clear autumn day and insisted the height marks on my doorframe remain visible in the background of the family photographs. Claire finished her degree and took a position that let her stay close enough for Sunday dinners that still somehow ended with everyone arguing over the same childhood stories. June’s research kept her farther away, but her calls arrived with the regularity of someone who had decided distance was logistics, not absence. I attended the milestones I was invited to and stayed home for the ones that belonged only to them. The balance felt familiar. It was the same balance we had practiced when they were small and the world was the size of a single apartment above a hardware store.
