Chapter 11: The Permanent Orders
At the final hearing the evaluator’s report recommended that primary custody remain with me, that the no-contact order against Evelyn be made standing, and that Taylor’s parenting time continue under supervision until she completed a court-approved education program on the impact of coercive and frightening discipline and demonstrated sustained insight. The judge adopted the recommendations with only minor scheduling adjustments. Evelyn was permanently barred from contact. Taylor received a structured path that did not include unilateral decision-making authority or overnight visits until further order. Lily’s primary residence was confirmed as mine. The chest freezer, the blue lips, and the child’s statement that the cold was used to make her think were cited as the factual core that no later reframing could dissolve.
I signed the acknowledgments, took the certified copies, and drove Lily back to the small house I had leased with a real lease term instead of a week-to-week rental. She carried her backpack and the newest drawing—another sun, another pair of stick figures, a house with a door that had a large lock. She asked if the papers meant Grandma could not come inside even if Mom said it was okay. I told her the papers meant exactly that. She nodded and went to place the drawing on the refrigerator with a magnet. The ordinary kitchen appliance held only her art. No one in the house would ever again confuse cold with instruction.
