Chapter 14: The Folder on the Shelf

I kept the certified orders, the hospital photographs, and the forensic interview summary in the same folder on the high closet shelf. I did not take them down for reassurance. I took them down only when someone outside the court process suggested that enough time had passed for the family to “move on” or that a child needed her grandmother regardless of past mistakes. The image of Lily’s blue lips and frost-stiff hoodie usually ended those conversations without requiring me to raise my voice. The record was clinical and sufficient. It did not need my anger to remain true.

Taylor completed the required programs and eventually petitioned for a modification toward unsupervised time. The court allowed a gradual, monitored step-up after reviewing the evaluator’s updated input and Lily’s continued stability in my care. Overnight visits remained off the table for a long additional period. Evelyn stayed under the permanent no-contact order. No motion to lift it succeeded. The freezer itself, as far as I ever learned, was eventually removed from the house; I never went back to confirm. The property and the people inside it had ceased to be my responsibility the night I carried Lily out of the ice and into the ambulance.
