Chapter 2: The Laughter That Died

The entire patio burst into laughter.

It was the automatic, affectionate sound adults make when a small child produces a sentence that seems charmingly confused. Someone repeated the words. Someone else raised a glass in Liam’s direction. Marcus grinned and wiggled the boot as if the joke belonged to him. Liam smiled the careful public smile he used when attention landed on him, the one that never reached the tension I only sometimes noticed at the corners of his eyes.

Assuming she was telling one of her adorable, confused stories, I smiled and knelt beside her.

“What do you mean, sweetheart?” I asked.

Chloe looked around, clearly puzzled by why everyone was laughing. Her brows pulled together in the expression she wore when the grown-ups failed to understand something obvious. She waited until the noise dropped a little, then answered in the clear, matter-of-fact voice she used for reporting the weather or the color of a truck.

“At the park. When Uncle Marcus stands. Daddy sits on the ground by his boot and cries. He says he’s sorry. Uncle Marcus tells him to be quiet so the other daddies don’t hear. Then Daddy wipes his face on the boot and they walk home. He does it a lot.”

She said it without drama, without any sense that the information was heavy. She was simply correcting the misunderstanding. The boot was the place. The crying was the fact. The rest followed in the order she had observed it on more than one Sunday morning while I slept in.

When she finished speaking, every smile disappeared.

A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the patio.

And when I looked at my husband’s face, I realized Chloe had just exposed a secret he had been desperately trying to hide.
