Chapter 7: The Written Account
Liam placed the handwritten pages on the kitchen table that evening while Chloe slept. The statement was eight pages long, dated, and signed. It began with the workplace error two years earlier, the amount Marcus had covered, and the progressive conversion of that debt into scheduled compliance. It described the first time Marcus had required him to kneel. It described the introduction of the park as the preferred setting. It recorded the specific threat: if Liam stopped bringing Chloe, Marcus would stop controlling what she witnessed and would instead shape her memory into something that sounded like invention. The final pages listed dates, approximate durations, and the exact language used to enforce silence. I read every line without interruption. When I finished I photographed each page, stored the images in an account Liam could not access, and locked the original in the fireproof box we had once used for passports and birth certificates. The document did not restore trust. It simply converted a spoken confession into a fixed record that could not be revised later under pressure.
