Chapter 10: Inside, Named

Julian was arrested on a wet morning on charges that would multiply as forensics landed—identity-related counts, conspiracy, evidence connected to the abandonment, financial trails through the LLC. He did not look at Spencer when cameras flashed. Spencer did not offer a family tableau.

Pamela faced medical-board action and civil suits; her tears no longer bought her narrative control. Jocelyn’s cousin kept the reward channel open. Harlan said the search for Jocelyn continued, colder and more serious than before.

Spencer signed longer-term kinship and guardianship filings with Casey’s supervision still inked in the margins. Charlee asked if she had to leave when “the case was over.” Spencer said the only over that mattered was the kind where she still had a key.

In the foyer, where Julian’s cufflinks had once caught the light, Spencer hung nothing ceremonial. He fixed the draft at the door. He listened to Charlee read a picture book to Dexter in a language of seven-year-old authority and newborn silence.

The traitor had already been inside the home.
