Forensics turned the cracked phone and the prepaid into a timeline that did not need Spencer’s anger to stand upright.
Jocelyn had been steered to a “mediation” about silence money. Pin drops stopped near a warehouse district. The prepaid had texted package delivered – wall two nights before Charlee’s knock. Julian’s secondary had replied with a thumbs-up. Harlan called the thumbs-up a kind of confession that fools left behind because they thought encryption was personality.
Spencer received the briefing in Victor’s office with the door closed and his hands flat on his knees. He did not ask for the thumbs-up photo to keep. He asked whether the warehouse had been searched. It had. Traces, not a miracle. Harlan’s voice stayed measured: the case for abandonment and conspiracy was thickening; the case for anything worse remained open and hungry.
Charlee, at home, had begun drawing the mansion with two small figures and a circle she labeled Dex in unsteady letters. Mabel taped the drawings on the fridge like any other family. Spencer stood before the fridge longer than he stood before most impressionist paintings he owned. Ordinary proof, he was learning, was the only luxury that mattered.

The court leaned toward longer kinship placement for Charlee and a parallel track for Dexter that made Spencer’s name permanent unless a better truth arrived. Spencer attended every hearing in person. Cameras flashed. He did not perform grief or sainthood. He answered questions about schedules, about Florence’s visitation, about whether a billionaire could change diapers. He could. He did.
Julian’s counsel floated a narrative of rogue contractors. Victor dismantled it with invoices and gate logs. The board asked Spencer to take a voluntary step back from daily operations during the trial season. He agreed, not as surrender, as focus. The company had trained operators. The children had him.
