Chapter 7: Distance That Held

By the third month the calls had thinned into something more honest.

Dad stopped leading with fairness and started leading with weather, work, the minor updates of a man who had realized the old script no longer opened doors. I answered when I had time. I did not rearrange board meetings for his regret. Mom’s lunch invitations remained occasional and still came without an attached request for money; I kept the ones that fit and declined the ones that arrived as pressure dressed in pearls. Evan stayed quiet. The cousin who had forwarded his joke stopped forwarding anything at all.

Marissa closed the informal file with a note that no further correspondence was required unless I initiated it. I did not. The foreclosure documents returned to storage. Their usefulness had been the evening they landed on the dining table, not a permanent exhibit.
