Chapter 8: The Work

The company did not pause for family weather.

We hired, shipped, and renewed the hospital contract that had first made the acquisition possible. On the anniversary of the graduation I did not post a reflective caption. I approved a product release and left the office early enough to walk the long way home. The penthouse did not feel like a trophy when I unlocked the door. It felt like a place I had paid for with years no one in that dining room had attended.

A junior analyst asked me once, carefully, whether the real-estate article had caused problems. I said it had caused clarity. She nodded as if clarity were a metric she understood. I did not elaborate. Some lessons are not training material.
