Chapter 15: The New Beginning

Six months after the divorce was finalized, the boys and I moved into a new home closer to their school and my work.
It was not the grand estate Gavin had once promised. It was a modest, sun-filled house with a backyard big enough for them to run and a kitchen where I could make breakfast without anyone watching to see if I used the right silverware. My parents visited often. The boys thrived.
Gavin exercised his visitation with careful punctuality at first, then less frequently. He never apologized to the boys for the divorce hearing or for Sloane. He simply showed up and tried to act like the father in the photographs he had once sent me. The boys were polite but distant. They no longer asked to stay longer.
I did not interfere. I simply made sure their home with me remained safe, consistent, and full of love.
One evening Nolan and Parker sat on the porch with me watching the fireflies.
Nolan looked up at me.
“Mom, are you happy now?”
I pulled both of them close.
“I am. Because I have you two. That’s all I ever really needed.”
Parker rested his head on my shoulder.
“I like it when it’s just us.”
I kissed the top of their heads and watched the fireflies dance across the yard.
The woman who had once stood silently beside Gavin at charity galas no longer existed.

In her place was Cassandra Devereux—the mother who had fought for her sons without ever raising her voice in anger, the woman who had taken back her name and her company, and the person who had finally chosen herself.
And that choice had been more than enough.
