Chapter 4: The Records
The following week the courtroom was even more crowded.
Judge Beckett had reviewed the full ownership and financial records overnight. She began the session by addressing Gavin directly.
“Mr. Rourke, the original incorporation documents, the equity distribution records, and the tax filings for the first eight years of the company all list your wife as the majority owner. Would you like to explain why you believed the company was yours?”
Gavin’s lead attorney tried to intervene, but the judge silenced him.
Gavin’s voice was strained.
“I built the operations. I brought in the major contracts. Cassandra stepped back after the twins were born. It was understood that the company was mine to run.”
“Understood by whom?” the judge asked.
Gavin had no answer.
I stood when invited.
“Your Honor, I stepped back to raise our sons. I never transferred my ownership. Gavin managed the company, but the equity and the controlling interest remained with me. The prenuptial agreement he drafted protected certain personal assets but never addressed the company shares because I refused to sign any document that would transfer them.”
The judge turned back to Gavin.
“Mr. Rourke, your request for primary custody and the majority of marital assets appears to be based on a fundamental misunderstanding of ownership. The court will require full disclosure of all company finances before any further decisions are made.”
Gavin’s face had gone pale. Sloane no longer sat beside him. She had moved to the back row.
The hearing continued for another two hours. By the end, the judge had ordered an independent audit of the company and temporary joint custody with primary residence with me pending further review.
As we left the courtroom, Gavin tried to speak to the boys. Nolan and Parker stayed close to me.

“You spent thirteen years believing you owned everything. Today you learned you owned nothing that truly mattered.”
