Chapter 1: The Scream Across the Lawn

Dad, Check Her Purse…” My Daughter Whispered After Grandma Tried to Silence Her. When I Opened It, My Wife’s Name Was on a Hospital Document.
I Was Mowing The Lawn When I Heard My Daughter Crying. I Ran Inside. My Mother-In-Law Had Her Pinned To The Floor. Her Hand Was Over My Daughter's Mouth. She Was Hissing: "You Saw Nothing. Say It. Say You Saw Nothing." I Pulled Her Off. "What Are You Doing?" She Laughed: "She's Lying. She Always Lies." My Daughter Sobbed: "Dad, Check Her Purse..." Her Face Went Pale As I Opened It...
The scream cut straight through the lawn mower's growl. For one awful second, I thought the blade had hit something alive.
Then I recognized the voice.
My daughter.
I dropped the mower handle in the middle of the yard. The engine coughed out behind me as I ran for the house, fresh-cut grass stuck to my boots and sweat running down my back.
Then Lily screamed again.
"Dad!"
The front door was already open. I hit the porch steps too fast, grabbed the railing, and nearly went down on the grass I'd tracked across the entryway.
"Lily?"
Cartoons were still playing in the living room. A cereal bowl sat on the coffee table, milk going gray around the floating loops. One pink sock was near the stairs. Outside, the sprinkler kept clicking across the lawn like this was an ordinary afternoon.
A muffled sob came from the hallway.
Lily's bedroom door was half closed.
I shoved it open.
My mother-in-law, Marlene Whitaker, was kneeling on the rug with one hand clamped over my nine-year-old daughter's mouth. Her other hand dug into Lily's shoulder so hard the skin around her fingers had gone white.
Lily kicked and twisted beneath her, fighting to pull away.
Marlene's sprayed silver hair had fallen across her forehead. Her blouse was twisted at the waist. She looked nothing like the woman who corrected my table manners, inspected our baseboards, and liked to call herself "the only adult in this family."

She looked desperate.
"If you tell Daddy," she hissed close to Lily's face, "your mother won't wake up next time."
