Chapter 6: First Perimeter
By the next morning the initial protective lines were in place.
Marlene was not permitted in the house. The police report for the assault on Lily was active. The hospital had formal notice that she was to receive no information and no visitation rights regarding my wife. My attorney began the process of documenting both the physical incident with Lily and the deliberate concealment of medical information. Temporary adjustments to emergency contacts and household access were completed the same day.
Lily remained with my sister for the first full day so I could move between the hospital and the necessary administrative steps without leaving her alone. The finger marks on her shoulder were photographed again for the medical and legal records. She repeated her account once more to the child advocate the department assigned: Grandma put her hand over her mouth, told her not to tell Daddy, and said Mommy might not wake up if she did. The statement stayed consistent.
Marlene’s counsel sent a formal letter requesting “family de-escalation” and the withdrawal of the police report. The response, issued through my attorney, was brief. The report would stand. Contact with Lily was prohibited. Any attempt to obtain medical information about my wife through third parties would be treated as a violation of the hospital’s updated directives and of the emerging protective measures.
I kept the original hospital document and the photographs in a secure folder. The lawn mower was finally moved out of the yard. The cartoons in the living room were turned off. The ordinary surface of the previous afternoon no longer existed.
My wife remained stable. Lily remained safe under the first layer of formal boundaries. Marlene remained outside the house she had treated as her jurisdiction.
The threat spoken against my daughter’s ear had been real.
