Chapter 14: The Ordinary Continuity

Chloe moved through the months with the careful resilience of someone who had stepped outside a script written for her and discovered she could survive the exit.
She continued therapy that Patricia had arranged early. She returned to her own apartment when she was ready. She did not resume contact with Mitchell outside the formal process. On the rare occasions his name surfaced between us, it surfaced as fact rather than as unfinished emotional business. The envelope of instructions had been the last object he successfully placed in her hands. Everything after that had belonged to evidence control and to the decisions she made once the fear of obeying him no longer governed the afternoon.
I ran the business. The hotel accounts continued. The supply chain absorbed the temporary disruption of the audit and then stabilized. Erin, who had known me long enough to recognize the difference between crisis and resolution, marked the one-year point with a single observation over coffee: the suitcase had never reached the staircase, and that single failure of logistics had been enough to end the larger design. I agreed. We returned to the actual work of the quarter.
