Chapter 5: The Box and the Clock

By 2:40 p.m. the emergency order had been signed.
Ruiz and Hale left for the bank with a second detective. Chloe and I remained with Patricia in the suite. The cover story—that I was in an ambulance and Chloe was too panicked to move the suitcase yet—bought a narrow window, but only if Mitchell continued to believe it. Patricia drafted a short sequence of texts for Chloe to send if he contacted her again: fragmented, stressed, still compliant with the original plan in tone. The goal was not to invent new lies. The goal was to keep him from accelerating or aborting until the box was under legal seal.

At 3:18 p.m. Ruiz called. The safe-deposit box had been opened under the order. Inside was a small black hard-sided suitcase, heavy for its size. It was not opened at the bank. It was logged, sealed, and transported to a secure evidence facility. Preliminary external examination noted that the locks were consistent with commercial cases used for document or media transport. Full forensic opening would occur under controlled conditions with a prosecutor present. The 4:00 p.m. retrieval window had closed on an empty box. Anyone arriving with Mitchell’s authorization would find nothing to move to Pine Ridge.
Chloe exhaled once, the first full breath she had taken since the airport. I kept my hands flat on the table and watched the time stamp on Ruiz’s confirmation email.
