Chapter 1: The Coat

I drove six hours to surprise my elderly father for his seventy-eighth birthday, but the moment I offered to help him bathe, he recoiled like I had frightened him.

“Please, Elena,” he whispered, clutching the front of his coat. “Don’t take this off.”

His hands were trembling.

When I carefully eased the heavy coat from his shoulders, I stopped cold.

There were disturbing marks across his fragile skin—signs that someone had been handling him far more roughly than anyone had ever admitted.

Then Dad told me what my brother and sister-in-law had been doing when nobody else was around.

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t storm downstairs.

I simply picked up my phone and made one call.

A call that was about to change everything.

The first warning came the moment I reached for the buttons on Dad’s coat.

He grabbed my wrist.

“Please,” he said. “Don’t let Julian know you saw anything.”

I stared at him.

I had arrived that afternoon expecting a birthday visit.

From the street, the house looked perfect. The lawn was neat, the windows clean, and everything appeared normal.

But the second I stepped inside, something felt wrong.

Every curtain was drawn despite the bright afternoon sunlight.

The house was unnaturally quiet.

Then my brother Julian’s wife, Chloe, appeared.

She was dressed in expensive jewelry and wore a smile that disappeared almost immediately.

“You should’ve told us you were coming,” she said. “Your father gets confused these days.”

Seconds later, Dad came into the hallway.

My chest tightened.

He had lost a frightening amount of weight since I had last seen him three months earlier.

And even though the house was warm, he was wearing a thick wool coat buttoned all the way up.

“Dad?”

His eyes instantly filled with tears.

He started toward me, then stopped.

Only after Chloe left the room did he finally hug me.
