Chapter 5: Evidence and Separation
By midnight the emergency protective order was in effect.
Julian and Chloe were required to leave the property. They were prohibited from contact with my father, from returning to the house, and from any third-party attempt to obtain information about his location or medical status. Their access to his remaining accounts was frozen pending full review. The new will and the power-of-attorney documents Julian had displayed earlier were flagged for immediate examination by the appropriate probate and adult-protective units.
I authorized a complete financial forensic review. Bank statements, the lake-cabin sale records, the investment-account withdrawals, and every signature page Dad had been pressured to sign were collected under formal chain of custody. The grocery receipts and medication lists Julian had used to perform devoted caregiving were preserved as well; they would be compared against actual expenditures and against the pattern of isolation he and Chloe had maintained.
Dad was moved that night to a temporary secure residence arranged through the protective-services protocol. I stayed with him. The house he had lived in for decades was sealed for evidence processing. Chloe’s expensive jewelry and the carefully staged living room no longer mattered. The drawn curtains no longer hid anything.

Julian’s first formal communication arrived through counsel before dawn. It claimed I had manipulated a vulnerable elderly man, that the marks were misinterpreted, and that my government position was being used to settle a private family grievance. The response, issued through the proper channels, was brief. The protective order stood. The medical documentation, the recorded statements, and the preliminary financial discrepancies would be reviewed by the appropriate authorities. Personal characterizations of my motives were irrelevant.
I did not call Julian. I did not answer Chloe’s messages. The only priority was the seventy-eight-year-old man who had been restrained, threatened, and systematically stripped of control over his own life while the rest of the family was kept at a distance.
