Chapter 11: The Longer Arc

By late summer Claire and Luca had set a wedding date for the following spring.

They asked me to help with the parts of the planning that involved family coordination. I agreed without the old anxiety of needing to be flawlessly agreeable. When Hélène sent a carefully worded email suggesting certain traditions from the Beaumont side, I answered with equal care and without apology for the traditions that belonged to Claire and to me. The exchange remained civil. The hierarchy that had tried to establish itself at the lake table did not reassert itself in writing.

Luca called me once, on his own, to thank me for the weekend. He did not elaborate on the confrontation. He simply said that Claire had needed to see someone stand beside her without hesitation, and that he was glad the person had been her mother. The conversation was brief and sincere. I accepted it as the quiet confirmation it was meant to be.

In September I enrolled in a weekly French conversation group at the local library. The other participants were a mixture of retirees, a few graduate students, and one young teacher preparing for a year abroad. I spoke when I chose to. I did not perform fluency for approval. I simply used the language again, allowing it to live in my mouth the way it had in Lyon decades earlier. The leader of the group asked, after the third session, whether I had spent significant time in France. I said yes. I did not offer the full story. The full story was no longer something I needed to explain in order to justify the skill.
