Chapter 7: The Morning After

I woke early the next morning to the sound of the lake and the low creak of the old house settling around itself.

For a few minutes I lay still and allowed the previous evening to return in sequence—the private French, the measurements taken of Claire, the moment I set my fork down, the language I had not used in decades leaving my mouth with clean precision. The old reflex to minimize what I had done tried to surface. I let it pass without obeying it. I had not created a scene. I had simply refused to remain misread.

When I went downstairs, Claire was already in the kitchen making coffee. She looked tired but clearer than she had the night before. She handed me a mug without asking how I took it; she had always known.

“Luca talked to them after we went to bed,” she said. “He told them the comments about me were not open to interpretation. He also told them that if they wanted a relationship with the family we are building, they would need to adjust the way they speak about the people in it.”

I sat at the counter.

“And their response?”

“Defensive at first. Then quieter. Hélène said they had not intended harm. Philippe said something about cultural differences and frankness. Luca did not accept either explanation as sufficient.” Claire wrapped both hands around her own mug. “He’s on my side, Mom. Fully. I needed to see that.”

I nodded. The knowledge settled something in me that the confrontation alone had not finished. My daughter was not alone in the recalibration. The man she intended to marry had chosen the same direction.
