Chapter 7: The Vows Under Observation

We spoke the vows in a chapel that still carried the weight of everything that had entered through the double doors. The officiant kept to the traditional language, neither rushing nor pausing for effect, as if the ordinary cadence of the words might restore a measure of order to a room that had already been rewritten. Ethan’s voice remained low and steady, the same controlled register he used when addressing a jury that had already formed its first impressions. Mine did not break. I had walked the aisle alone under my father’s sentence; I would not give the back row the additional satisfaction of a trembling delivery. The guests sat in a silence that had changed character. Earlier it had been the silence of embarrassment. Now it was the silence of people who understood they were present for something larger than a family slight. My father remained seated, spine rigid, eyes fixed on a point somewhere beyond the altar. My mother had not opened her purse again. Caleb’s shoulders were hunched forward, the posture of a younger brother who had been given no role and no explanation. When the rings were exchanged and the final pronouncement made, the applause that followed was brief, almost cautious, the sound of an audience still recalibrating its response after watching a public humiliation transformed into a public accounting. Ethan’s hand settled at the small of my back for a single moment, a quiet confirmation that we had crossed the threshold together under terms neither of us had written in advance.
