Chapter 8: The Exit and the First Separation

The receiving line never fully materialized. Several guests offered short, measured congratulations and moved directly toward the exits, their expressions careful. Others lingered only long enough to acknowledge Ethan with a nod that carried more weight than the usual wedding pleasantries. The thirty people in gray did not return to the sanctuary. They remained in the vestibule until we stepped through the doors, at which point Marcus Bell inclined his head once, a collective gesture from the group rather than a request for conversation. The two officers had shifted to a less conspicuous position near the curb, still visible, still waiting. My parents left by a side entrance without crossing the space where we stood. Caleb followed them after a single glance in my direction that contained neither apology nor alliance. The planned family photographs were abandoned without discussion. A few friends remained long enough for a short series of pictures on the chapel steps, the ivory of my dress bright against the late-afternoon light, the absence of the Whitmore family as noticeable as any presence could have been. Ethan stayed beside me through every frame, his posture unchanged, the quiet discipline of a man who had already survived the harder part of the day and was prepared to survive the rest of it without performance.
