Chapter 1: The Beginning of the End

I married Ryan on a sunny afternoon in June, wearing a white lace dress and believing — foolishly — that I was stepping into a happy future.
His mother, Linda, stood at the front of the church with a tight smile on her face. She hugged me after the ceremony and whispered into my ear, just loud enough for only me to hear:
“You’ll never be good enough for my son.”
I smiled back and pretended I hadn’t heard her.
In the beginning, I tried. I really did. I brought her gifts on holidays. I invited her over for dinner. I asked for her advice on cooking Ryan’s favorite meals. But nothing I did was ever right.
According to Linda, I was too quiet. Too ambitious. Too modern. She constantly compared me to Ryan’s ex-girlfriend, Sophia — a woman she still spoke to regularly.
“Sophia would have given Ryan children by now,” she would say loudly at family gatherings. “And she wouldn’t be working such long hours. A wife’s place is at home.”
Ryan would laugh it off and tell me not to take her seriously. But I saw the way he sometimes looked at me afterward — like maybe his mother had a point.
Then I got pregnant.
For six beautiful weeks, I allowed myself to hope that things might improve. Linda even seemed excited at first. She bought baby clothes and started talking about names.
But that kindness didn’t last.
One afternoon, when I was four months pregnant, Linda came over while Ryan was at work. She insisted on making me tea. I drank it because I didn’t want to be rude.
Two hours later, I started bleeding.
The doctor said the miscarriage was likely caused by something toxic. They ran tests but couldn’t find anything conclusive. I lay in the hospital bed staring at the ceiling while Ryan held my hand and cried.
Linda came to visit once. She sat by my bed, patted my hand, and said in a sweet voice:
“These things happen. Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be.”
I looked into her eyes and saw something cold and satisfied there.

That was the moment something inside me broke.
And something much darker took its place.
