Chapter 8: The Cracks Begin to Show

Ryan started noticing changes in me.
I was distant. I barely ate. I would sometimes zone out in the middle of conversations. At night, I would wake up gasping from nightmares I couldn’t remember.
One morning, while we were having breakfast, he put down his coffee and looked at me seriously.
“I think you should talk to someone,” he said. “A therapist. You’ve been through a lot these past few years. Taking care of Mom… it must have been harder than you let on.”
I stared at him.
For a second, I felt a flash of panic.
Did he suspect something?
But then I realized he was just worried about me. He genuinely thought I was grieving.
I reached across the table and took his hand.
“I’m okay,” I lied. “I just need some time.”
Ryan didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t push.
Still, I became more careful after that.
I started forcing myself to act more normal around him. I smiled more. I asked about his day. I even initiated sex a few times, even though I felt nothing.
But inside, the emptiness kept growing.
Sometimes, when I was alone, I would think about Linda’s final moments. The way she had looked at me with pure terror. The way she had called me evil with her last breath.
I had wanted her to suffer.
I had wanted her to know that I was the one destroying her.
But now that it was over, I kept wondering…
Was this all there was?
Had I become this person for nothing?
One night, I dreamed of Linda.
She was standing at the foot of my bed, thin and skeletal, pointing at me with a shaking finger.
“You’re just like me now,” she whispered in the dream. “You think you’re better, but you’re not. You enjoyed it.”
I woke up gasping, my heart pounding.
For the first time since her death, I felt something close to fear.
May you like
Not fear of being caught.
Fear of what I had become.
