Chapter 13: The Returning Length text

Meadow’s hair grew back in stages, first as soft dark-gold stubble that she would touch only when she thought no one was watching, then as a short uneven cap she still covered in public, and finally as a length that began to move when she turned her head. The pink hat spent more nights on the bedpost than on her head. Speech returned the same way—practical requests first, then small observations, then, months later, ordinary sentences that did not carry the weight of the guest-room floor. She never asked for Judith. She never asked why the orders existed. She simply lived inside the fact that the door no longer opened to the person who had held the clippers.
