Chapter 12: First Perimeter

The postpartum days were quiet by design.

Beate stayed in a single room with the baby. Feeding, weighing, the slow establishment of a rhythm that belonged only to the two of them. Julia handled visitors from the allowed list. Thomas coordinated with Brenner when a routine update on the case was required. Gero was informed of the birth through counsel and reminded that the protection order remained in force without exception. He made no attempt to breach it.

Beate named the child Anna, after her mother’s mother. The name required no approval. She wrote it on the form herself.

On the third evening Thomas sat in the chair beside the window while Anna slept in the bassinet.

“You kept her safe,” he said.

Beate looked at the small rise and fall of the blanket.

“We kept her safe,” she answered.

He accepted the correction with a slight nod.

Outside the hospital the process continued—evidence, statements, the long formal path that would determine what consequences Gero faced. Inside the room the only process that mattered was the next feed, the next check of temperature, the next hour in which no one raised a voice or a hand.

The cage had not vanished from memory.

It had simply lost the power to dictate the shape of the days ahead.

Beate slept when Anna slept.

Thomas kept the door closed against everything that was no longer allowed to enter.

And for the first time since the belt had come off the hook, the future contained a child who would never have to learn the sound of counting to fifty.
