Chapter 14: Distance That Held

By the time Anna was two, the protection order had become part of the background architecture of their lives rather than a daily emergency.

Gero made no successful attempts at contact. Whatever new life he built remained outside Beate’s field of view by design. She did not search for updates. Curiosity would have been another way of remaining tethered. Instead she returned, carefully, to part-time teaching work. The classroom required nothing from her except competence and presence. Both were possible again.

Thomas never asked her to forgive. He never framed the past as a lesson she needed to recite. On the rare evenings when the old fear surfaced—when a raised voice in a parking lot or an unexpected knock made her body remember counting—he simply stayed on the line until her breathing evened. That was the extent of the perimeter he still maintained: available, quiet, finished with speeches.

Beate watched her daughter stack blocks on the living-room floor and felt the distance between the bedroom parquet and this ordinary carpet as a fact rather than a wound that still required constant pressure.
