Chapter 2: The House of Cards

The dial tone hummed against Daniel’s ear like a flatline.

He stood in the center of the dining room, the phone slowly slipping from his fingers to clatter against the hardwood floor. The yellow envelope lay gutted on the mahogany table, its contents scattered like the debris of a plane crash.

The silence of the house was no longer merely empty; it was oppressive. It was the sound of a vacuum sealing him inside his own nightmare.

His eyes were locked on the photograph. Marcus Vale. The government contractor who was currently the subject of a federal grand jury investigation for racketeering, bribery, and extortion. Daniel’s hands began to shake as the memory of that afternoon at the Grand Hotel clawed its way to the surface of his mind. He had introduced Marcus to Vanessa. He had brokered a kickback scheme using his construction firm to launder Vale’s dirty money, funneling it through the shell companies set up by Vanessa’s brother.

It was supposed to be a foolproof triangle.

But Claire had the photo. Which meant Claire had been watching.

Panic, cold and sharp as a scalpel, sliced through his chest. He lunged for his dropped phone and frantically opened his mobile banking application. He typed in his password.

His breath hitched. He navigated to his secondary, private offshore account—the one he had painstakingly hidden behind layers of encrypted firewalls, the one where he had been siphoning the company’s operating capital.

Error: Access Denied. Assets Frozen Pending Legal Review.

"No, no, no," Daniel chanted, his voice echoing pathetically in the hollow room. "She can't do this. She doesn't have the authority."

But as the words left his mouth, a horrifying realization dawned on him. He had spent the last decade treating Claire like a delicate, domestic ornament. He had forgotten the woman he married. He had forgotten the brilliant forensic accountant who used to trace missing millions for corporate conglomerates before she traded her tailored suits for maternity clothes.

She hadn't just left him. She had financially decapitated him.

His phone buzzed in his hand, making him jump. The caller ID flashed Vanessa’s name, accompanied by a heart emoji he had assigned to her contact.

He answered it, his voice tight. "Vanessa."

"Danny, darling!" Her voice was light, bubbly, accompanied by the distinct, soothing pan flute music of the elite spa she frequented on Thursday afternoons. "I just got back to the suite. The diamond tennis bracelet you sent over is stunning. Simply exquisite. Have you ditched the wife yet?"

The sheer, oblivious vanity of her question made Daniel feel physically sick.

"She's gone," Daniel croaked, his throat tight.

Vanessa paused. "Wait, really? You finally told her?" She let out a delighted, triumphant laugh. "Oh, my God, Daniel! We need to celebrate. Champagne tonight at my place."

"You don't understand," Daniel snapped, the terror finally breaking through his paralysis. "She didn't just leave. She took everything. The house is empty. My accounts are frozen. The company accounts are frozen."

The pan flute music in the background seemed to suddenly drop in pitch.

"What do you mean, frozen?" Vanessa’s voice lost its playful lilt, instantly shifting into a sharp, defensive register. "Daniel, what did she find out?"

"She knows about Marcus Vale," Daniel hissed, pacing the length of the empty dining room, stepping on the discarded luxury shopping bags he had brought home. "She left a photograph, Vanessa. A photograph of the three of us leaving the Grand Hotel. She left divorce papers, and she left banking records."

"Banking records?" Vanessa’s breathing quickened. "Which records?"

"I don't know yet! But she's a forensic accountant, Vanessa! If she found the offshore accounts, she found your brother’s shell companies. Which means she found the laundering trail."

"You idiot!" Vanessa shrieked, the mask of the glamorous, adoring mistress shattering instantly. "You told me she was clueless! You told me she spent her days baking cupcakes and driving to soccer practice! My brother is going to go to federal prison because you couldn't secure your own damn computer!"

"I did secure it!" Daniel yelled back, his own anger flaring to mask his terror. "She must have hired a private investigator. Or she hacked the network. I don't know!"

"Fix it, Daniel," Vanessa ordered, her voice turning lethal. "You find her, and you fix it. Because if my brother goes down, I am not going down with him. I will hand them every email you ever sent me on a silver platter."

She hung up.

Daniel stood in the empty house, the dial tone buzzing in his ear once again. The woman he had risked his family for had turned on him in less than sixty seconds. He was completely alone. And tomorrow was Friday. The day he had to face the board of directors.
