Chapter 4: The Mistress's Gambit

Vanessa Cole’s luxury penthouse smelled of jasmine, expensive champagne, and panic.
She was frantically tossing designer clothes, jewelry boxes, and stacks of foreign currency into a large leather trunk when the heavy oak door of her apartment rattled violently under the force of Daniel’s pounding.
"Vanessa! Open the door!"
She froze, her manicured hands gripping a velvet jewelry box. She glanced at the security monitor. Daniel looked deranged. His tie was missing, his suit jacket was crumpled, and his eyes were wild.
She pressed the intercom button. "Go away, Daniel. I have nothing to say to you."
"Open the damn door, Vanessa, or I'll break it down!" he roared, slamming his shoulder against the wood.
Vanessa cursed under her breath. She needed him calm long enough for her to get to the airport. She unfastened the deadbolt and pulled the door open, immediately stepping back to maintain distance.
Daniel stormed in, bringing the frantic, desperate energy of a hunted man into her pristine living room. He looked at the open suitcases, the scattered clothes.
"You're running," he sneered, breathing heavily. "You're actually running."
"My brother was indicted an hour ago, Daniel!" Vanessa screamed, dropping the pretense of her smooth, sultry persona. Her face was flushed, her mascara slightly smudged. "The feds raided his office in Miami. They seized the servers. Claire didn't just freeze the accounts, she handed the entire Apex Logistics ledger to the Department of Justice!"
Daniel stumbled backward, falling heavily onto her white suede sofa. He buried his face in his hands. "She fired me. The board terminated me. The FBI is probably at the Vanguard offices right now."
He looked up, searching Vanessa's face for a shred of the adoration she had showered him with for the past six months. He was looking for a partner in the wreckage.
"We need a lawyer," Daniel said, his voice trembling. "A joint defense team. We can fight this. We can say she manipulated the data, that it’s a vindictive ex-wife trying to—"
"There is no we, Daniel," Vanessa cut him off, her voice dropping to a cold, reptilian hiss. She walked over to the mahogany desk in the corner and picked up a manila folder.
Daniel stared at her, the betrayal compounding the shock. "What do you mean? I did this for you. I took the money for us."
"You did it because you were bored and greedy," Vanessa snapped, tossing the folder onto the glass coffee table in front of him. "And you got caught because you were sloppy. I am not going to federal prison because you couldn't keep your bitter wife in check."
"You think they won't come for you?" Daniel laughed, a hollow, broken sound. "You’re the marketing director. You signed off on the shell company invoices. You’re in the photograph with Marcus Vale!"
"I was a junior executive following the direct orders of my CEO," Vanessa countered flawlessly, the defense narrative already perfectly rehearsed. "I have emails, Daniel. Emails where you explicitly instructed me to approve those vendors. I have recorded phone calls where you assured me the compliance department had cleared the transfers."
Daniel felt the floor drop out from under him. "You recorded me?"
"Of course I recorded you," Vanessa sneered, zipping her suitcase with violent finality. "Did you really think I trusted a man who was lying to his wife every single day? You were a stepping stone, Daniel. An ATM with a corporate title."
The illusion of their glamorous, illicit romance shattered into a million sharp, pathetic pieces. He had traded a brilliant, loyal wife and a beautiful son for a woman who had been building a case against him from their very first night in a hotel room.
"You give that folder to the FBI," Daniel warned, standing up, a dark, primal desperation taking over his features, "and I will tell them exactly what your brother does for Marcus Vale. I will tell them about the intimidation. The bribes to the zoning commissioners."
Vanessa stopped dead, her hand on the handle of her suitcase. For the first time, a flicker of genuine fear crossed her eyes.
Before she could respond, the sound of the elevator chiming in her private foyer echoed through the apartment.
Both of them froze.
Heavy, synchronized footsteps approached the door.
"FBI!" a deep, authoritative voice boomed through the wood. "Open the door! We have a federal warrant for the arrest of Vanessa Cole and Daniel Vance!"

Vanessa looked at Daniel, her glamorous face crumbling into sheer terror. The game was over. The house of cards had completely collapsed.
Daniel didn't look at the door. He looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows, across the city skyline, toward the suburbs where his house sat empty, where his wife had quietly packed a bag and erased him from the earth.
