Chapter 11: The Record Expands

After he fell asleep I returned to the notebook. The entries were becoming a timeline rather than a list of isolated surprises:

– Night 1: “working late,” message on the watch the next morning

– Morning after: 37 minutes inside the unmarked brick building before continuing to the real office

– Night 2: corporate apartments, woman with recorded license plate, hand on her back

– Night 3: same apartments, woman arrives first with café bag, Cameron follows using the door code, both still inside at 9:26

I added the new details without commentary: arrival times, the code entry, the fact that she had her own access, the repeated soap. I still wrote no conclusions about the nature of the relationship. The facts were doing that work on their own. What mattered was that the version of his schedule he continued to give me had now failed three times in succession, each failure landing at the same address with the same person.

I closed the notebook and sat in the dark kitchen for a while. The house felt unchanged—same furniture, same photographs on the shelf, same wedding date etched into the frame on the side table. The difference lived entirely in the gap between the story he told and the movements I had now watched with my own eyes. Nine years of not checking had trained me to accept the story. Three nights of checking had trained me to stop.
