Chapter 4: The Building

I remained in the car for thirty-seven minutes. In that time no one else entered or left the brick building. The street stayed ordinary—delivery vans, a woman walking a dog, two men carrying coffee toward the café on the corner. Cameron did not reappear. I watched the windows on the second floor without knowing which, if any, belonged to the appointment he was keeping. The lack of signage began to feel deliberate rather than accidental. When he finally came out, he was alone. He checked his watch, looked neither left nor right, and walked back to his car with the same unhurried pace he had used going in. He pulled into traffic and headed in the direction of the office park. I let three cars pass before I followed.
