Chapter 1: The Evidence on the Table

After six years without a child, my husband walked out, cut off every form of support, and left me with almost nothing. Then the quiet former sheriff who lived across the road made me an offer I never expected.

Six months later, I was pregnant with twins and being treated by some of the country’s most respected doctors.

But what truly made my ex-husband go pale was discovering who the “lonely sheriff” really was.

The night Julian ended our marriage, he laid my fertility records across the kitchen table as though they were evidence against me.

Then he smiled.

“Chloe is pregnant,” he said, adjusting the cuffs of the expensive suit I had helped him buy. “So I guess now we know who the problem was.”

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

For six years, I had endured injections, surgeries, endless appointments, and losses that left me emotionally exhausted.

Through all of it, Julian’s mother repeatedly reminded me that a proper wife should be able to give her husband children.

Julian had always pretended to be on my side.

He held my hand in clinic waiting rooms.

He kissed my forehead after failed treatments.

He promised that whatever happened, we would face it together.

Apparently, that promise ended the moment his assistant showed him a positive pregnancy test.

I stood on the other side of the table and stared at the papers he had arranged so carefully. My name appeared on every form. Every failed cycle. Every note that had once felt like a shared burden. Now they were exhibits. He had even brought the most recent summary, the one the doctor had handed us only three weeks earlier with the same careful neutrality doctors use when they have no new answers to give.

Julian watched me the way a man watches something he has already decided to discard.

“You can keep the records,” he said. “I won’t need them anymore.”
