Chapter 2: Documentation

The drive to the hospital passed in heavy silence. Clara sat rigid, arms wrapped tightly around herself, staring at the rain. I kept my eyes on the road and my voice steady whenever I spoke, offering only practical information: which entrance we would use, what the examination would involve, that she could stop at any time.

At the emergency department I requested a forensic nurse examiner and identified myself solely as Clara’s mother. The nurse was experienced, calm, and precise. She photographed every injury under proper lighting, measured each bruise, and recorded Clara’s account in meticulous detail. Three years of escalating violence. Financial control. Isolation from friends and colleagues. Repeated threats that any attempt to leave would result in losing Sophie.

A victim advocate joined us within the hour. Together we contacted the appropriate officers and obtained an emergency protective order covering both Clara and Sophie. The process was methodical, almost clinical, and that was exactly what we needed. Emotion would come later. Evidence came first.

By the time we finished, the rain had slowed to a fine mist. Clara looked hollowed out but clearer, as if the act of speaking the truth aloud under official documentation had removed a weight she had carried alone for too long.

“We get Sophie now,” I said.

She nodded, though fear still lived in her eyes.

I understood that fear. Daniel had spent years teaching her that the system belonged to him. My task was to show her, step by careful step, that it did not.
