Chapter 9: The Firm
Pressure began to build in places Daniel had previously considered secure.
Mercer, Vale and Knox prided itself on discretion and reputation. When reliable information reached senior partners that one of their own was the subject of a documented domestic-violence investigation involving forensic evidence and a child, internal discussions started. No formal action was taken immediately, but Daniel’s name began to be quietly removed from certain client pitches and recruiting events. In a firm culture that valued the appearance of stability, even the suggestion of serious personal misconduct was toxic.
I learned of these developments indirectly, through professional channels that required no improper influence on my part. I recorded nothing and requested nothing. I simply allowed the ordinary consequences of evidence to move through the system.
Clara noticed the change in Daniel’s tone during the limited, supervised communications permitted by the court regarding Sophie’s schedule. The smooth threats had given way to something tighter and more brittle. He still believed he could recover control. He was beginning to understand that the cost of attempting it had risen sharply.
Hannah Cole sat with us one afternoon and reviewed the growing file.
“He’s still dangerous,” she said. “Men like this often escalate when they feel the walls closing in. We keep the security measures in place and we give him no procedural openings.”
Clara listened, then asked the question she had been circling for days.
“Do you think he’ll actually face real consequences? Or will this all become another negotiation?”

I said nothing, but I agreed completely.
