Chapter 9: Steady State

By the end of the first week the immediate crisis had resolved into a controlled pattern.

Abigail attended a follow-up medical appointment under the protection order’s terms. I sat in the waiting area in civilian clothes and watched the door without needing to announce why. No one from the Ferguson family appeared. The detective assigned to the matter confirmed that the initial evidence package—photographs, statement, hospital record, and the account of the doorway confrontation—was complete and moving forward.

I made two further arrangements: a longer lease on a discreet residence, and a clear financial separation plan so that Abigail would not remain dependent on any account Nicholas could influence. Counsel handled the language. I handled the decision.

On the seventh evening Abigail sat at the small table in the temporary apartment and looked at me for a long time.

“They thought you would just take me home and be quiet,” she said.

“They thought wrong,” I answered.

She nodded once, the motion still careful around the fading bruises.

Outside, Charlotte continued its ordinary traffic. Inside, the perimeter held. The Fergusons retained their money, their connections, and their opinions about military rank. What they no longer retained was access to my daughter or the ability to dictate the next chapter of her life.

That condition was not temporary.

I intended to keep it permanent.
