Chapter 7: After the Ring

The week after Daniel returned the ring, the house settled into a quieter arithmetic.

Vendors were paid for work already done and released from work that would not be. Vanessa’s name disappeared from the shared calendar Rosa kept at the service desk. A few mutual acquaintances reached out to Daniel with careful curiosity; he answered with a brief statement that the engagement had ended by mutual recognition that it should, and then he stopped answering the ones who wanted narrative. I fielded two calls from women who had smiled at me over charity luncheons and now wanted the “real” story. I gave them none. Real stories, in this case, belonged to the people who had stood in the foyer with dirty water on the floor.

Daniel threw himself into work with the intensity of someone rebuilding a wall that had cracked. I did not tell him to rest. Rest would come when the adrenaline of decision wore off. I only made sure the kitchen stayed stocked and that his old room remained available without comment. He used it twice, late, after evenings he did not describe. In the mornings he drank coffee in silence and left with a nod. The nod was enough. We had already said the difficult things.

Rosa asked whether the foundation’s summer reception should still list Vanessa among the host-committee names printed in a draft program. I said no, and we ordered a reprint. Small corrections are how a household tells the truth after a larger one.
