Chapter 8: Luis and the Floor

Luis requested a private word on a Tuesday while polishing the banister he had been ordered, once, to address from his knees.

He did not want an apology from Vanessa. He wanted to know whether his job was safe if another guest decided staff were animals. I told him the standard had always been safe, and that the failure had been in how long it took the standard to become audible to Daniel. I offered him, through Rosa, a formal note in his file acknowledging the prior incident and confirming that no such order would be tolerated again. He accepted the note more than any speech. Paper, for people who have been made small, sometimes matters more than warmth.

I walked the foyer alone that afternoon. The marble held no stain. Memory did. I stood where the bucket had fallen and let the sequence run once, deliberately: the muddy mark, the refusal, the water, the laugh, Daniel on the stairs, the glasses coming off. Then I went to the garden and washed my hands in the outdoor sink even though they were clean. Ritual is not always rational. It is sometimes how the body files a closed case.
