Chapter 5: Pressure

On the fourth day my parents attempted a joint visit without the lawyer present.
They arrived with the practiced expressions of people who had agreed, in the car, on a shared strategy of calm reasonableness. My mother spoke of family continuity and the danger of decisions made in pain. My father spoke of optics and the story that would circulate among people who still invited them to dinners. I let them finish. Then I told them the documents were final, the filings complete, and the conversation about restoration closed. The silence that followed was longer than the one that had answered my nine calls.

Lauren appeared in the corridor afterward, alone. She did not enter the room. She stood where I could see her and said, through the open door, that I had turned a moving day into a referendum on her entire life. I answered that the referendum had been conducted by nine unanswered calls and a public video of throw pillows. She left without further argument. The boundary held in both directions.
Julian sent a brief status note: no legal challenges had been filed, and none were expected to survive the contemporaneous medical notes and the witnessed execution. I thanked him and returned to the physical-therapy schedule taped to the wall. Progress would be measured in degrees of motion and walking distance, not in restored inheritance language.
