Chapter 9: The Ledger Final text

By the sixth month every institutional echo of the old estate plan had been replaced.

No residual access remained. No informal understanding survived the filings. The lake house continued under professional management as an asset among others. The foundation operated with its revised board. The education trusts that had once been discussed at family dinners simply were not there to discuss. My parents adapted, or did not, at a distance I no longer measured.

I marked the passage of time by the closing of therapy goals and the reopening of ordinary professional commitments. The wealth that had made the estate changes possible remained what it had always been: the product of work completed years earlier, not a lever for permanent family compliance. I used it for the purposes I chose. Those purposes no longer included insulating Lauren’s household or guaranteeing my parents a seat at every table they wished to occupy.
