Chapter 7: Vacate

Celeste left the house on the third morning of the seventy-two-hour window.

She arrived with her attorney and a single moving pod. Two officers stood by as required under the supervised removal. I remained off-site and watched the exterior feeds. She took clothes, jewelry, personal electronics, and a set of files from the study that had already been imaged and logged. She did not attempt the green hatbox shelf; the wardrobe had been sealed after the initial collection.

At the threshold she paused and looked up at the nearest visible camera—the one she had once claimed made her feel watched. For a moment her face held the same raw calculation I had seen in the kitchen when the feather duster was still raised. Then she smoothed it away and walked to the car.

Her attorney sent a letter that afternoon demanding access to the full security archive and accusing the temporary orders of being punitive rather than protective. My counsel answered with the medical findings, the hatbox inventory, and a sample of the unedited segments already in evidence. The demand narrowed into something more procedural and less confident.

I walked through the house after she was gone. The rooms still carried her arrangements—the flowers, the ordered surfaces, the careful lighting. None of it altered the footage. I authorized a locksmith, a full change of codes, and the removal of every access credential she had ever held. Then I returned to the hospital and sat with my mother until the evening medication pass.

The physical structure of the marriage was already gone.

What remained was the legal dismantling of what she had tried to take with her.
