Chapter 4: The Final Layer

I did not sleep.

After Mark retreated down the hallway, I returned to the cabinet, removed the entire contents of the wooden box, and carried them into the narrow bedroom. Under the weak desk lamp I sorted the forged letters by approximate date, then set the authorization form aside, and examined the remaining papers that had been pressed flat at the bottom.

The final document was a quitclaim deed.

It transferred my parents’ interest in the childhood home to Mark Vance. The signature lines carried what appeared to be my parents’ names, dated fourteen months earlier. A notary stamp sat in the lower corner. I had never heard of any sale, any refinancing, any discussion of transferring the property. The house that still held a bucket under the ceiling and a cane repaired with electrical tape had, on paper, already left their ownership.

I photographed every page under consistent light, sent encrypted copies to my attorney in Manhattan, and placed the originals in a sealed folder inside my luggage. The layer Mark had warned me my parents “could never survive knowing” was not only the theft of the monthly transfers. It was the quiet removal of the roof over their heads while they rationed medication and wore coats indoors to protect a son who had never been in debt.
