Chapter 5: Morning

At 6:40 a.m. I made coffee in the kitchen with the last of a store-brand can and waited.

My mother appeared first, still in the doubled coats, surprised to find me already at the table. My father followed, cane tapping the worn linoleum. Mark arrived last, face closed, the brass key no longer in his hand. He had clearly decided that further physical control of the box was pointless.

I laid the materials out in order: the forged letters, the bank authorization form, the printed record of the monthly $3,500 transfers, and finally the quitclaim deed.

“These letters were not written by me,” I said. “This signature on the authorization form is not mine. The money I sent every month for medication, groceries, and house expenses was redirected by the person named as authorized representative. And this deed appears to transfer the house out of your names and into Mark’s. I have already sent copies to my attorney and to the bank’s fraud unit. The originals stay with me until the proper authorities request them.”

The silence that followed was not empty. It was the sound of a decade collapsing into a single kitchen under a leaking roof.
