Chapter 5: The Fallout

The first sound that broke the silence was a chair scraping hard against the floor.

Natalie stood. For a moment she seemed to search for an expression that could restore control—shock, confusion, wounded innocence. None of them settled properly. Jackson rose beside her, caught between the instinct to defend his new wife and the public evidence he could no longer dismiss.

I did not remain to watch the rest of the unraveling.

Judith and I left the ballroom through a side door. My financial adviser met us in the corridor, confirmed once more that every authorization related to the gift had been revoked, and informed me that hotel security had already requested copies of the security-log extract and the housekeeper’s statement. The young waiter who had approached me earlier had given a formal account of Natalie’s comments about the money and the shaved head.

We did not linger.

In the car Judith finally spoke.

“You were steady.”

“I had to be,” I answered. “Frank would not have recognized the woman who stayed silent after that note.”

She reached across the seat and closed her hand over mine. The simple contact was enough.

At home the house felt different. The missing jewelry and the destroyed dress were still facts, but they no longer carried the same weight of helplessness. I removed the silver wig, set it on the dresser, and stood for a long moment in front of the bathroom mirror. The smooth skin of my scalp no longer looked like a violation I had to hide. It looked like evidence.

I slept that night without the sedative I had considered earlier. The locked accounts and the public record of what Natalie had done formed a quieter boundary than any locked door.
