Chapter 8: The Fracture

Jackson came to the house on a Thursday afternoon three weeks after the wedding.

He looked older than he had in his tuxedo. The anger he had directed at me in the hotel corridor had thinned into something more complicated. He sat across from me in the living room Frank and I had furnished together decades earlier and placed the folder of documents on the low table between us.

“I read everything,” he said.

I waited.

“The security log is clear. Maria’s statement is clear. The waiter’s account matches what you told me. Natalie still says you’re exaggerating, but she can’t explain the time stamps or why she was in your bedroom at that hour.”

He rubbed a hand across his face.

“She asked me not to come here. She said any conversation with you would be used against her.”

“And yet you came.”

“I needed to hear it from you without her in the room.”

I told him again, calmly and without embellishment, what had happened from the moment I woke and touched my bare scalp to the moment I canceled the transfer. I did not raise my voice. I did not demand that he leave her. I simply refused to soften the sequence of facts.

When I finished, Jackson sat in silence for a long time.

“I don’t know who I married,” he said finally.

“That is a realization only you can carry,” I answered. “I will not carry it for you.”

He left an hour later. He did not ask for the money. He did not ask me to reconsider the canceled gift. He only asked whether he could come back another day. I told him the door would remain open to him, but not to the version of the story Natalie preferred.
