Chapter 10: The Drive Home

The next morning we left early. Dad drove his own truck—the same one Grant had already scheduled for evaluation—and I followed in my car. The route was familiar, two hours of winter highway under a sky that had finally cleared. Neither of us filled the silence with unnecessary review. The facts of the previous day were already fixed: a false death announcement, a premature division of property, a signed list of every person told the lie, and a set of retractions completed before nightfall. What remained was the simple act of walking back into a house that had nearly been treated as vacant.
