Chapter 14: The Distance That Held

I visited every few weeks. We cooked, repaired small things around the house, and spoke of ordinary subjects—weather, local news, the truck’s latest minor complaint. We did not rehearse the speakerphone conversation or the signed list of retractions. Those details had already done their work. The perimeter around his property, his accounts, and his decisions remained intact because the people who had tested it no longer found the risk acceptable. Grant’s name never surfaced. Vanessa’s name surfaced only when some piece of family logistics required it, and even then only as a fact to be managed, not a relationship to be restored.

Harold, for his part, made certain the local version of events stayed accurate. A false death announcement attached to a retired funeral director’s name had a short half-life once the funeral director himself corrected it. The town absorbed the correction the way small towns absorb most embarrassments—quickly, and with little appetite for revisiting the original claim.
