Chapter 3: The Next Day

I returned to work the next morning because the rent did not pause for humiliation.

The house was quieter than usual. Two of the junior staff glanced at me and then away. One of the older housekeepers, Marta, met me in the linen room and said, simply, “We saw the recording. You didn’t deserve that.” It was the only comment anyone offered to my face.

Daniel had already circulated a brief internal note: the accusation against me had been false, the footage was conclusive, and Vanessa was barred from the property. The note helped. It did not erase the memory of the slap or the way the room had turned in a single breath.

Midday, Margaret asked to see me in the sunroom. She held the necklace in its case as if it still carried a charge.

“I believed the bag,” she said without preface. “I shouldn’t have. I’m sorry.”

I accepted the apology because it was direct and because I did not have the energy to measure its depth. She offered to replace the bag if I wanted nothing further to do with the one from the night before. I declined. The bag was mine. Vanessa did not get to take that too.

In the afternoon I cleaned the second-floor corridor with my usual care. Every time a door opened behind me I felt my shoulders tighten. The reaction would fade. I knew that. Knowing it did not make the first day easier.
