Chapter 6: After the Satisfaction

The satisfaction of mortgage document was a single recorded page, but it changed the air in our house more than any apology had.
Margaret’s surgery date held. I drove her to the hospital at dawn, signed where the clipboard indicated, and sat in a waiting room that smelled of coffee and hand sanitizer. Ethan texted a neutral thinking of Mom that did not ask for a rewrite of the past year. I replied surgery started and put the phone away. When the surgeon came out with ordinary good news, I called Ethan once with the facts and ended the call before it could become a stage. Margaret woke irritable and relieved. I adjusted her pillows and did not invite an audience.

At home the renovation list came down from the corkboard in stages. Grab bars. A walk-in shower. The roof line that had waited while $180,000 sat under someone else’s toast. Contractors tracked mud through the hall; I paid invoices from an account that no longer carried a private loan to Westfield. Each payment felt like reclaiming a sentence that had been spoken over marble without our names.
Claire brought the baby for a short visit when Margaret could sit upright. She did not bring Richard or Elaine. Ethan stayed in the car on the first drop-off, then came to the door on the second with his hands visible and empty of speeches. He asked about Margaret’s pain levels. He did not ask whether we were “over it.” I preferred the pain question. It had a true answer.
