Chapter 9: Second Winter

Snow came early. We hosted Thanksgiving for four adults and one child in a dining room that did not require a second mortgage to explain.

Ethan and Claire brought pies. Richard and Elaine were not present; Claire said they had chosen a sibling’s table, and the choice suited everyone. Ethan did not raise a glass to anyone’s parents. He carved turkey with ordinary concentration. Margaret’s knee allowed her to sit through the meal without the pinched look of the year before. I watched the baby smear potatoes and felt the specific gratitude of a crisis that had become background rather than siren.

After dessert Ethan helped with dishes and asked, quietly, whether I still had the folder. I said the satisfied note was filed. He said he sometimes still woke expecting the bank to call. I said that was between him and his memory. I dried a plate. He stacked it. The domestic quiet held.

On the porch as they left, Claire hugged Margaret longer than the cold required. “Thank you for not making the baby pay for the party,” she said. Margaret answered that children do not inherit toasts. Claire’s eyes shone. Ethan shook my hand the way men do when words have already been spent. The car pulled away. The street was white and empty. I locked the door and checked the thermostat. Ordinary duties. Ordinary peace.
