Chapter 9: Someone Knows

The first person from her present life to cross the secret’s edge was Daniel’s sister, Marianne.

Marianne arrived unannounced the next morning, all polished concern and sharp eyes, claiming she had been “in the neighborhood.” Clara knew better. Marianne collected shifts in other people’s composure the way some women collected jewelry.

“You left the wedding very suddenly,” Marianne said, accepting tea she did not drink. “People noticed.”

“I wasn’t feeling well.”

“And now you’re missing meetings and looking like you haven’t slept in days.” Marianne’s gaze moved over the room, lingering a second too long on the closed folder on Clara’s desk. “If something is wrong, it’s better the family hears it from you than through rumor.”

Clara almost laughed at the word family.

Instead she said, “There’s nothing to report.”

Marianne smiled the thin smile of a woman who did not believe that for a second. As she left, she paused in the doorway.

“There was a boy outside the hall that night. One of the servers mentioned you spoke to him. Dirty little thing with a photograph.” Her eyes flicked to Clara’s face. “Odd, isn’t it? How quickly a stranger can attach themselves to kindness.”

The comment was shaped like casual gossip and aimed like a probe.

After the door closed, Clara stood very still in the center of the room.

Someone had already noticed Noah.

Someone was already fitting him into a narrative of inconvenience, manipulation, threat. If Marianne was asking questions, others might follow. And if the wrong person reached the boy before Clara finished establishing the truth, the story could be taken out of her hands exactly as it had been years ago.

She called the woman watching Noah.

“Do not let him speak to anyone else,” Clara said. “No matter how well dressed they are.”

Then she picked up her keys.

If the past was going to surface, she would not let it be discovered first by people who only knew how to protect appearances.
