Chapter 4: Hair

Weeks passed in a rhythm of soft hats, pediatric follow-ups, and short supervised exchanges of adult conversation that never included Emma in the room.

Lauren accepted a diversion outcome on the theft-related piece that spared a trial and required conditions I cared about more than spectacle: stay-away terms, restitution symbolic and real, no contact with Emma. Margaret was named in the endangerment review; the formal result was less dramatic than the balcony had been, but it produced a paper trail and a warning that stuck to family myth-making like burrs. She called it persecution. I called it the minimum.

Emma’s scalp went from red to fuzzy. She stood on a stool at my mother’s mirror and touched the growth with careful fingers. “Teddy bear hair,” she decided. I laughed for the first time in weeks. Daniel recorded the moment on his phone and then asked if he was allowed to. I said yes. Joy was not a betrayal of vigilance.

We looked for a new apartment—three of us, new keys, no spare for Margaret. Claire was not in this story. This story’s sister-in-law had already chosen a purse over a child. Daniel’s loyalty was a daily practice: school forms, bedtime, the refusal to let his mother’s voice enter through the soft panel of “she meant well.” Meaning well did not shave a three-year-old’s head for cover.
